  • Midsummer

Midsummer is here and the quieter times are coming soon. Last week I have just relaxed and I haven’t birded at all, even though there is still possibilities to see accidental rare birds. There are some birds I have to try to find during the next month. The following week will be good for Two-barred Crossbill because there are crossbills migrating right now. The problem is they migrate very early…

  • Summer nights

Last two weeks I’ve had busy times finding the missing bird species before they stop singing. The sun rises at 4 Am and the only chance to see or hear new birds is to wake up at 3.30 Am or stay awake all night. I’ve been rather tired after so many sleepless nights. I also heard a Grasshopper Warbler at the same spot.  In the mornings I rode to Lake Vesijärvi to check if there’s any arctic waterfowl. On may 15th there was around 200 Long-tailed Ducks. I had…

  • Budding leaves

This week was the period of budding leaves, but all of a sudden the spring turned back into winter. There was a cold breeze, night frosts and some wet snow came out of the sky. On 4th of May there was a Finnish ”Big sit” – Eight hours battle of birdbatching towers in Finland. We had a team in Lake Vesijärvi in Lahti. The weather was windy and cold and…
