New year

The first day of the year started with a miserable weather. There was a snow storm in the night and in the morning it started to pour ice cold rain. The roads were covered with slush and ice and the day was a real test for by bike. Pedaling in the slush is pretty easy though. The ice surface is a bit harder. I still have to change tires for the winter. I bought a neoprene battery protection for keeping the battery warm. It seems to work well. I pedaled 23 kilometres today.

I started the day in the home village by chasing the Eurasian Nuthatch that I found earlier in the autumn. I did not find it. Then I drove to twitch the two Little Grebes that have been in the same small pool in Lahti since November. I also tried to find spontaneously White-throated Dipper from the Porvoonjoki river without success. I saw today 19 species – 17 of them spontaneously.

Overall I felt really good despite the bad weather. I am so excited and it’s fantastic to have a mission for the year.

Vuoden ensimmäinen päivä alkoi surkealla säällä. Yöllä saapui lumimyrsky, joka muuttui aamulla jäätäväksi vesisateeksi. Tiet olivat sohjoisia ja osin jäisiä – todellinen testi sähköpyörälle. Sohjossa pyöräileminen oli kuitenkin aika helppoa, mutta jäällä vähän vaativampaa ilman nastarenkaita. Hommasin pyörään neopreenisen akunlämmittimen. Se näyttäisi toimivan ihan hyvin. Ajoin tänään 23 kilometriä.

Aloitin päivän etsimällä kotikylältä pähkinänakkelia, jonka olin löytänyt aiemmin syksyllä. En löytänyt sitä, ainakaan vielä. Seuraavaksi ajoin Lahteen Ali-Juhakkalan puhdistamolle, jossa on majaillut kaksi pikku-uikkua marraskuusta lähtien. Yritin myös etsiä Porvoonjoelta spontaania koskikaraa siinä onnistumatta. Näin tänään 19 lajia, joista spontaaneja oli 17.

Kaiken kaikkiaan olo tuntui miellyttävältä huonosta säästä huolimatta. Olen todella innoissani – mieletön fiilis aloittaa pitkästä aikaa vuosi jolla on selkeä suunnitelma.
